A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is a regulated mental health professional licensed to treat clients in a psychotherapeutic context and perform the act of psychotherapy.
Only professionals registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) can use this title. Licensure requires completion of an approved training program, hundreds of hours of clinical work and supervision, and successful completion of the CRPO’s licensing examination. -

Psychotherapy is not covered by OHIP, but is often covered by health insurance plans (such as student or employee healthcare plans). If you are unsure about your coverage, please contact your provider directly to check if they cover services provided by a Registered Psychotherapist (RP).

No.
In Ontario, Registered Psychotherapists (RPs) are not able to assess, diagnose, or provide prescriptions for medication. Instead, RPs focus on providing quality therapy as a mental health resource. Clinical Psychologists are legally able to diagnose and assess individuals, while doctors are able to assess, diagnose, and prescribe medications if needed.
Ontario’s healthcare system is in significant crisis, impairing quality and accessibility of all care, including psychological services. This can result in doctor’s appointments that overlook comprehensive conversations about concerns, diagnoses, and medication, leading to delays in receiving assessments and treatment, improper adherence to treatment plans due to miscommunication, lack of clarity about diagnoses and prognoses, and increased medical anxiety.
While I am not legally able to assess, diagnose, or provide medications, I do my best to stay educated on current treatments to assist my clients in navigating this context. Should you need a referral for private assessments, a space to develop skills in patient self-advocacy, or if you simply need support navigating the impacts of this reality, I am here to help.
